Trinity 14 - September 5 - Renewal of Heart

Scriptures and Hymns • September 5

The Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity

Intent: Renewal of Heart

Processional Hymn 219

  1. Humbly we adore Thee, ever present Lord,
    Father, Son and Spirit, Truth and living Word;
    Take our hearts as offering, wholly Thine to be;
    Take our hearts and souls surrendered unto Thee.
  2. Bread and wine memorial of our risen Lord,
    Who in death has offered life as our reward;
    Bread of life to all mankind, every breath You give,
    Grant that by Thy life our longing spirits live.
  3. Taste and touch and vision to discern Thee fail;
    Faith, that comes by hearing, pierces through the veil.
    Face to face Thy splendor I, at last, shall see;
    In the glorious vision, Blessed Lord, of Thee.
  4. Christ, our Lord, we bless Thee, for this wondrous Bread.
    In our land Thou dwellest, by Thee we are fed.
    We who share this myst’ry in Thee are made one,
    ev’ry act we offer, in Thy name is done.
  5. Now with glad thanksgiving, praise Christ glorified.
    He is in us present in Him we abide.
    Members of His body, we in Him are one,
    Hail this sacred union, heav’n on earth begun! Amen.

The Collect

O GOD, who in thy loving-kindness hast appointed for us a ministry of reconciliation, that by it our feet may be restored to the path wherein we should walk; grant us that, firmly resisting all temptation, we may follow that path unto its glorious end in thee; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle

The epistle is taken from the first chapter of the First Epistle General of St John, beginning at the first verse.

THAT which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, of the Word of life (for the life was manifested and we have seen it and bear witness and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested unto us); that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. These things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. This then is the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all.

The Gospel

The holy gospel is taken from the ninth chapter of the Gospel according to St Matthew, beginning at the second verse.

THEY brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed; and Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy: Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. But certain of the scribes said within themselves: This man blasphemeth. And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said: Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say: Thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say: Arise and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins (then saith he to the sick of the palsy): Arise, take up thy bed and go unto thine house. And he arose and departed to his house. And when the multitude saw it, they marvelled and glorified God, who had given such power unto men.

Offertory Hymn 86

  1. SPIRIT Divine, pour forth Thy Love
     As here we make our vow;
    Descend with all Thy glorious powers,
     O come, Great Spirit, now!
  2. Come as the Light: to us reveal
     Our emptiness and woe:
    And lead us in those paths of life,
     Where all the righteous go.
  3. Come as the Fire, and purge our hearts
     Like sacrificial flame;
    Let our whole soul an offering be
     To our great Master’s Name.
  4. Come as the Dew, and sweetly bless
     This consecrated hour;
    May barrenness rejoice to own
     Thy fertilizing power.
  5. Come as the Dove, and spread Thy wings,
     The wings of perfect love;
    And let Thy Church on earth become
     Blest as the Church above.
  6. Spirit of Truth, these hearts of ours
     With love and peace endow;
    Descend with all Thy heavenly powers,
     O come, Great Spirit, now! Amen.

Recessional Hymn 65

  1. O KING of Kings, Whose knights we are
     In uttermost devotion,
    Thy glory flames from star to star
     Across Thy love’s vast ocean;
    Yet Thou dost deign to meet us here,
     Reigning upon Thine Altar;
    Thy royal Presence we revere
     With love that shall not falter.
  2. Thou restest, Mystery profound,
     Veiling Thy heavenly splendour;
    Attendant Angels gather round,
     Their mighty aid to render,
    Within the Church’s sacred fane
     The mystic forms creating;
    O stir our hearts, to serve Thee here
     With ardour unabating.
  3. Hail, Mystic Light! Hail, Sacred Fire
     Upon the Altar glowing,
    Enflame our hearts with high desire,
     All valiant gifts bestowing,
    Be Thou our strength to right the wrong,
     All pause or respite scorning,
    Our beacon through the lonely night,
     Till He shall bring the morning.
  4. The Holy Cross again we take,
     The Knightly weapon bearing,
    So press we onward to the fight,
     The night of evil daring.
    Hail, Mystic Bread! Hail, Holy Cup!
     O purest Peace, descending!
    Vouchsafe O Lord, continuing Light,
     And Life in Thee unending.
  5. All glory to the Father’s name
     And to the Son all glory;
    The Holy Spirit, heavenly Flame,
     Shares in the wondrous story.
    With praise of Thee, great Three in One,
     The courts of heaven are ringing;
    In every land beneath the sun
     Thy Church to Thee is singing. Amen.
