How to Love God AND Science

Finally! Someone is talking and writing about a third point of view in the so far divisive "evolution vs. creationism" theological battle. I find the Intelligent Design theories myopic. On the other side, the atheists surely do not have an answer that represents my experience of God.

The third way is called Evolutionary Theology, and I think... Liberal Catholics and many other educated and devoted Christians will be glad that someone is finally presenting ideas that represent the rest of us. Brandon Keim has written an article titled "Evolutionary Theology: How to Love God and Science" at Wired Magazine on the teaching and writing of Rev. Michael Dowd, a dynamic pastor and proponent of Evolutionary Theology.

Until I saw this viewpoint entering the debate, I felt I was definitely not part of the discussion. It seemed pointless to wedge in between irreconcilable opposites. Now I see an intelligent expression of an all-encompassing theology that squares with my own experience and beliefs.

The Liberal Catholic Church promotes a theology of panentheism. Panentheism recognizes God as present in every fabric and phenomenon of Nature, the Creation, the Universe. God is transcendent as well, as the infinite, eternal, absolute Being of the Universe.

Clearly, the manner in which God unfolds God's purpose in the Creation can be nothing other than according to God's nature. Fans of both Intelligent Design AND atheism, along with us devotional mystics, would do well to head over the Wired Magazine and check out "Evolutionary Theology: How to Love God and Science"

Here is Rev. Dowd's website on his book on Evolutionary Theology, "Thank God for Evolution".

Michael and his wife, Connie Barlow, have also created an educational and community building website on the sacred evolution movement at http://www.thegreatstory.org

I am truly delighted to find a Godly new voice in what has so far been a bitter division among Americans.

In Christ,
Fr. Thomas Miller
